Privacy on Wikimedia
I am a Wikimedia privacy ombudsperson, selected from the global community to consider complaints that the website's privacy policy (and related policies) have been breached. In an age where information is increasingly monetised or used for oppression, I view privacy as an essential protection – ensuring that users can contribute to our projects with confidence. Many governments, corporations, and individuals would like to censor contributions to our project or retaliate against specific contributors. The privacy policy is no less than our defence against these treacherous phenomena.
The role of ombudsperson, or commissioner, involves checkusers, oversighters, and the Wikimedia Foundation being held to account without fear or favour. On the other hand, we are not Javertian characters, and those whom we question are entitled to respect and understanding.
