In 1958 James Broughton and Ann Halprin combined talents to make a review called RITES OF WOMEN that was produced at the San Francisco Playhouse. It's performers included Jane Staekle, John Graham, Helen Adam. Warner Jepson wrote his first song for James's REMARKABLE SAM, and used a 6' tape loop to accompany a dance of Ann's. James Broughton and Kermit Sheets, the director of the San Francisco Playhouse, then edited Helen Adam's long poem, SAN FRANCISCO'S BURNING, for its production by the Playhouse in 1961. Because it was all in verse, it resulted in sixty songs composed by Warner Jepson. It sold out from December to June of 62. As successful as it was, Helen would never allow it to be produced again with Warner's music. Warner Jepson composed the music for Broughton's THE BED.
