ئەشکەنجە یان ئەشکەنجەدان بریتییە لە سەپاندنی ئازار یان ئازاری زۆر بە ئەنقەست بەسەر کەسێکدا بۆ سزادان، دەرھێنانی دانپێدانان، لێکۆڵینەوە بۆ زانیاری، یان ترساندنی لایەنی سێیەم.

ھەندێک پێناسە ئەشکەنجەدان بەو کردەوانە سنووردار دەکەن کە لەلایەن دەوڵەتەوە ئەنجام دەدرێن، لەکاتێکدا ھەندێکی تر دەڵێن ڕێکخراوە نادەوڵەتییەکانش ئەشکەنجە بەکاردێنن. زۆربەی قوربانیانی ئەشکەنجە کەسانی ھەژار و پەراوێزخراون کە گومانی تاوانیان لێدەکرێت، ھەرچەندە ئەشکەنجە دژی زیندانیانی سیاسی، یان لە کاتی شەڕی چەکداریدا، گرنگییەکی کەمی پێ دراوە. سزای جەستەیی یاسایی و سزای لەسێدارەدان ھەندێکجار وەک جۆرەکانی ئەشکەنجەدان سەیر دەکرێن، بەڵام ئەو پێناسەیە لە ئاستی نێودەوڵەتیدا مشتومڕی لەسەرە. شێوازی جۆراوجۆری ئەشکەنجەدان بەکاردەھێنرێت، زۆرجار بەیەکەوە بەکاردەھێندرێن؛ باوترین جۆری ئەشکەنجەدانی جەستەیی بریتییە لە لێدان. لە سەدەی بیستەمەوە، زۆرێک لە ئەشکەنجەدەرەکان شێوازی بێ پەڵە یان ئەسکەنجەی دەروونییان پێ باشتر بووە بۆ خۆدزینەوە لە بەرپرسیارییەتی.

ئەشکەنجەدەرەکان زیاتر لە ترسەوە مامەڵە دەکەن، یان بەھۆی کەمی سەرچاوەکانەوە، نەک سادیزم. ھەرچەندە وا بیردەکرێتەوە کە زۆربەی ئەشکەنجەدەرەکان بە شێوەیەکی نافەرمی فێری تەکنیکەکانی ئەشکەنجەدان دەبن و بە دەگمەن فەرمانی ئاشکرایان پێدەگات، بەڵام لەلایەن ئەو ڕێکخراوانەوە چالاک دەکرێن کە ئاسانکاریان بۆ دەکەن و ھانی ڕەفتارەکانیان دەدەن. کاتێک بەرنامەی ئەشکەنجەدان دەست پێدەکات، بەزۆری لەوە زیاتر پەرەدەستێنێت کە لە سەرەتادا مەبەست بووە و زۆرجار دەبێتە ھۆی لەدەستدانی کاریگەرییەکانی دەزگا بەشداربووەکان. ئامانجی ئەشکەنجەدان شکاندنی ئیرادەی قوربانییەکە، لەناوبردنی دەزگا و کەسایەتییەکەی، و وەک یەکێک لە زیانبەخشترین ئەزموونەکان ئاماژەی پێدەکرێت کە بەسەر مرۆڤدا بێت. زۆرێک لە قوربانییەکان ھەم تووشی زیانێکی جەستەیی دەبن-بەتایبەت ئازاری درێژخایەن و ھەم دەرئەنجامە دەروونییەکان. ھەرچەندە ڕزگاربووانی ئەشکەن ھەندێک لە بەرزترین ڕێژەی تووشبوونیان بە نەخۆشی فشاری دوای کارەسات ھەیە، بەڵام زۆربەیان لە ڕووی دەروونییەوە خۆڕاگرن.
